Snow and Boston Equals Creative Parking Space Savers

Posted on December 27, 2010

As I am sure you are all aware of, Boston now has snow! Finally!! And if you aren’t aware, Bostonian’s are well known for their creative parking space savers. (This image was taken by Jon Titone). When I first moved out here, I was amused and also a little alarmed with this whole process (alarmed because if you dare to move these savers and park your car there, you can have the experience the pleasure of getting keyed…or worse).  I grew up in Minnesota, and never really saw much of the whole parking space saver thing. (The best I saw here in Boston was an entire dining room set in someone’s spot. I think that was my favorite).

If you’re not aware, you do not move these “savers” it can cause in a lot of bitterness and bad things will happen…so I’ve been told from other people’s experience.

Did you know that space savers are only allowed after the declaration of a snow emergency . Most drivers, however, use space savers after digging out from any plow-able snow. The City of Boston claims that: Any ‘spacesavers’ left in on-street parking spaces that have been shoveled out must be removed 48 hours after a snow emergency has ended. (Get more information here about Parking Ban Information).

Do you have a creative space saver or have you seen one? Will you share it with us? Because that would be awesome, and a great laugh!!

Yes, unfortunately we didn’t know this parking space etiquette. We returned from our travels, exhausted, to snowy Cambridge at midnight on Monday night. We parked in an empty shoveled parking spot (which wasn’t marked by anything that was visible in the dark!), and had all flat tires the next morning. :(

Came home last night to find a summer deck chair in the freshly shoveled spot in front of my house :-)
